Cayman Islands yacht registration costs explained

What drives the cost of registering a yacht with the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry, and where each figure comes from.

The Cayman Islands runs an open registry: a flag available to owners from a long published list of countries rather than to Cayman residents alone, administered by the Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands (MACI) from George Town. Open registries compete internationally on service and stability rather than on a domestic ownership link. Registering with one is still a sequence of distinct costs, and knowing which category each falls into tells you what MACI itself charges and what depends on the vessel and how it is owned.

Initial registration feeLink to this section

MACI charges a fee to process the application, allocate the vessel's official number and issue the certificate of registration. It is a fixed government charge. Cayman's current initial fee position: Registration costs US$1,750 up to 400 GT and US$2,250 above it, with tenders at US$700.Shipping Notice 04/2026 (Rev 1.1), Notice of Fees and Charges for Vessels which are Commercial and Pleasure Yachts, Tenders or Submersibles, Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islandswww.cishipping.com · Schedule, Section 1, A.1, item 1Retrieved 2026-08-29Effective 2026-04-01Open sourceInformational only, not legal, tax or financial advice. Annual fees and tonnage duesLink to this section

Once registered, a yacht carries costs that repeat for as long as it stays under the Cayman flag, typically an annual registration fee plus tonnage dues. Tonnage dues scale to the vessel's measured internal volume rather than its weight, which is the standard basis open registries use to size fees to the vessel. Cayman's annual fee position: The annual tonnage fee is US$600 up to 400 GT and US$800 from 401 GT, plus US$0.30 for each gross tonnage unit of 400 GT, payable by 31 January each year.Shipping Notice 04/2026 (Rev 1.1), Notice of Fees and Charges for Vessels which are Commercial and Pleasure Yachts, Tenders or Submersibles, Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islandswww.cishipping.com · Schedule, Section 1, A.3, item 15Retrieved 2026-08-29Effective 2026-04-01Open sourceInformational only, not legal, tax or financial advice. Private versus commercial registrationLink to this section

Cayman registers yachts for both private pleasure use and commercial charter operation. The two sit under different survey and crewing obligations, which in turn affects ongoing cost. Getting this classification right at the outset avoids paying for compliance work that does not match how the vessel is used. Cayman's position on the private/commercial split: Pleasure and commercial yachts are registered separately; the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code governs commercial yachts of 24 meters and over (Part A) and yachts carrying 13 to 36 passengers (Part B).Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands, 'REG to Consolidate Yacht Regulatory Framework'www.cishipping.comRetrieved 2026-08-11Open sourceInformational only, not legal, tax or financial advice. VAT and importation exposureLink to this section

The Cayman Islands has no domestic VAT regime, but that does not remove VAT exposure. A yacht that later enters EU or UK waters can still trigger import VAT there under those jurisdictions' own rules, based on the vessel's customs and VAT-paid history rather than its flag. Cayman's own import charge, which applies only if the yacht is imported into the Islands: Vessels over 18 feet pay 12% import duty on cost, insurance and freight (CIF) value; boats up to 18 feet are duty free.Import Regulations, Customs & Border Control, Cayman Islands Government (gov.ky)gov.kyRetrieved 2026-08-14Open sourceInformational only, not legal, tax or financial advice. What counts as evidence of prior VAT-paid status: Cayman has no VAT; in the EU, flag is irrelevant and Union status is proved case by case.Guidance Note for Pleasure Craft, TAXUD.A.1.003/EC, Brussels, 30 April 2026, European Commission, Directorate-General Taxation and Customs Union (Customs policy)taxation-customs.ec.europa.euRetrieved 2026-08-18Open sourceInformational only, not legal, tax or financial advice. Commercial exemption pathsLink to this section

A yacht that trades commercially can fall within customs and VAT exemptions that a privately used yacht cannot reach, under the same flag. Mortgage registration costsLink to this section

A financed yacht will usually need its lender's mortgage registered against it. The register entry gives the lender priority over later claimants and makes the security internationally enforceable, which is part of why financiers favor registries with a well-established mortgage regime. This is a separate transaction from registering the yacht itself, with its own fee. Cayman's mortgage registration position: Mortgages register on submission, rank in the order produced, cost US$1,100, and attract no duty on value.Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands, Registration of a Mortgage or Priority Noticewww.cishipping.comRetrieved 2026-08-11Open sourceInformational only, not legal, tax or financial advice. Is the initial registration fee a one-off cost?Link to this section

It is paid once, when the vessel is entered on the register. What follows it is separate: an annual charge for staying registered, and dues assessed against the vessel's tonnage. Compare registers on all three, not on the entry fee alone.

Does the Cayman Islands charge VAT on a registered yacht?Link to this section

There is no value added tax in the Cayman Islands. What a vessel brought into the Islands meets instead is an import duty, charged on its own basis, and European or British import VAT remains a question for those territories, answered on the vessel's customs history rather than on its flag.

Does commercial operation open any duty or VAT relief?Link to this section

Sometimes, and it depends on where and how the vessel trades rather than on the fact of commercial registration. A relief that fits one trading pattern will not fit another, so the test is worth running against the itinerary the yacht will actually keep before the structure is fixed.

Why do lenders lend against Cayman-flagged yachts?Link to this section

Because a mortgage recorded on this register is recognized and enforceable across the jurisdictions a large yacht visits, which is what a lender is buying. Priority follows the order of recording rather than the date of the loan, so the hour an instrument reaches the registry matters to a financier.

How do you turn these figures into a budget?Link to this section

Every figure above turns on the vessel, how it is used and how it is financed. Read these positions against the alternatives, compare on the the Cayman Islands yacht pillar or against Malta, model the sums with the flag cost comparator and the yacht VAT and importation calculator, then ask a specialist.
