A union of European states sharing a single market and a common body of law, which the registers of its member states operate inside.
What this group is
The European Union is a political and economic union of European states. Its members share a single market, a customs union and a body of law that applies across all of them alongside each state's own national law.
Law is made through the union's own institutions: the European Commission proposes, the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament adopt, and the Court of Justice of the European Union interprets. A register run by a member state therefore sits inside that legal order as well as inside its national one.
For an owner, the label on a register here means that the state running it is a member of the union. Whether any union-level rule reaches a particular yacht or aircraft turns on facts about the asset, its owner and its use, not on the register alone, and it is a question for a professional to settle.
