How long aircraft registration takes

What each register's published turnaround measures, what happens before the clock starts, and which parts of the calendar an owner actually controls.

Every published registration turnaround measures the same thing: how long the registry takes once its file is complete. It does not measure the part an owner controls, which is assembling the file, and on most applications that is the longer half of the calendar.

What do the published figures actually cover?Link to this section

The registry's own handling, from a complete application to the certificate. They assume title, airworthiness and financing documents are already in order, which is why two owners quoting the same figure can be months apart on the date the aircraft actually flies.

The title chain, the airworthiness review, the export certificate from the previous state of registry where there is one, and the financing documents if a lender is involved. Each of those has its own counterparty, and none of them moves faster because the registry is quick.

Does eligibility slow things down?Link to this section

It can stop them entirely. Where a register conditions ownership on a link it takes time to create, the structure has to exist before the application is made, and building it is a separate project with its own timetable rather than a step in the filing.

What happens immediately after the certificate?Link to this section

Continuing airworthiness management starts, and it runs for as long as the aircraft stays on the register. It is arranged before the certificate rather than after it, because an aircraft cannot sensibly be registered one afternoon and left without an approved organization the next.

Where does this decision sit among the others?Link to this section

It is one of the decisions in how to choose an aircraft registry, alongside EASA or non-EASA and who can own an aircraft. Check timing with the registration timeline checker, then ask a specialist.
