What survey and commercial code compliance cost a yacht owner, what triggers them, and why converting a private yacht to charter use pays for the work twice.
Survey and code compliance is the cost line that private and commercial use separate hardest, and the one that recurs longest. It is not charged by the register, it is triggered by the register's requirements, and for a commercially operated yacht it usually outweighs everything the register itself charges.

Every vessel is measured for tonnage before it is registered, and most registers require condition or safety survey evidence appropriate to the vessel's size and use. Beyond that, the requirements depend on whether the yacht will carry paying guests.

What does a commercial code add?Link to this section
A standard the vessel has to be built or brought up to, certificated against, and then audited to keep. Several registers apply a shared code rather than one of their own, and how much of it bites scales with length, tonnage and the number of guests carried.

On the register's cycle rather than once. Certificates are renewed, audits recur, and crew certification and labor-convention compliance are inspected rather than self-declared where they apply. A commercial yacht therefore carries a standing compliance budget that a private yacht of the same size does not.
