Yacht management companies: what they do, what they cost, how to choose
A yacht management company runs maintenance, compliance, crew administration and accounts for a fee. What your flag requires, with the source behind each line.
A yacht management company runs a yacht's maintenance, compliance, crew administration and accounts under a written agreement, for a fee. Most yachts large enough to carry professional crew are run day to day by one rather than by the owner directly. What a manager does, and how the relationship is usually structured, is covered in full in what a yacht management company does. WhichFlagToFly covers here the part a firm does not choose: what the yacht's flag requires, and what the market publishes about the fee.
When does your flag require a DOC-holding manager?Link to this section
At and above the tonnage at which the ISM Code applies in full, every flag in this comparison requires the yacht's safety management system to be held by an audited shore-based company, called the Document of Compliance holder, whether that is the owner's own company or an appointed manager. Below that tonnage, flags differ on whether a DOC is required, and the three positions below each state where their own threshold sits.

How much does yacht management cost per year?Link to this section
Management is charged as a monthly retainer scaled to the yacht's size, as a share of the operating budget, or as a blend of the two, with charter management priced separately. The bands below are a market norm rather than a tariff and do not vary by flag. Ask a manager for a proposal against a defined scope of work.
| What is charged | Published market position |
|---|---|
| Management fee | Management houses typically charge a fixed monthly retainer scaled to the yacht's size (market guidance puts it at roughly €1,500 to 15,000 or more a month by size) or a share of the operating budget, with charter management charged separately at typically 15 to 20 percent of charter revenue.breezeYachting.swiss - Professional Yacht Management Companies and Their Feeswww.breezeyachting.swissRetrieved 2026-09-01Effective 2025-10-25Corroborating source, not the register's own publicationOpen sourceInformational only, not legal, tax or financial advice. How do you choose, and switch, a manager?Link to this section
The right manager depends on the yacht's flag, whether it charters, how large its crew is, and how closely the owner wants to be involved, not on which company has the biggest fleet. Switching managers is routine in the industry and is mostly a matter of notice periods, handover of records, and re-registering who holds the Document of Compliance.
A captain or an existing crew are usually the first source of a shortlist; a compliance history and references from other owners on similar yachts are worth more than a brochure. See the yacht flag comparison for how the flag itself narrows the field before a manager is chosen.
What should be in the management agreement?Link to this section
A management agreement should state the scope of work in enough detail to know what is and is not included, how fees and pass-through costs like crew wages and fuel are billed and reconciled, who approves spending above a set threshold, and what happens to the Document of Compliance and the vessel's records if the agreement ends.
The full detail of scope, structure and fee models is covered in what a yacht management company does.
How does crew administration fit into management?Link to this section
Many management companies also run crew payroll and administration themselves, while others place it with a specialist agency and supervise the result; no flag in this comparison prescribes who runs it, so it is a firm-level choice rather than a jurisdiction rule, although which social security regime applies can turn on the flag.
See how yacht crew placement works for how that side of the relationship is usually structured, and ownership structuring for how the owning company behind the yacht fits alongside its manager.
