Which flag is better for EU chartering, the Isle of Man or Malta?Link to this section

Charter permission is what a flag lets a yacht do for reward. The Isle of Man Ship Registry offers Yacht Engaged in Trade under its Manx Shipping Notice, capped in charter days. Malta's flag is an EU flag, which the EU maritime cabotage Regulation turns on, coastal states deciding where charter is sold. See the charter rows.

How does VAT differ between the Isle of Man and Malta?Link to this section

Import VAT is the tax charged when a yacht enters a VAT territory. The Isle of Man is one territory with the United Kingdom for VAT and customs, so its Customs and Excise applies the UK standard rate and import basis. Malta charges VAT under its Value Added Tax Act on the customs value. The VAT rows show both.

How should an owner choose between the Isle of Man and Malta?Link to this section

Choosing between the Isle of Man and Malta turns on three inputs an owner already holds, namely the waters the yacht will spend its season in, whether charter income is part of the plan, and who owns and finances the vessel. Those inputs, not either register, decide the case, and a specialist can weigh them against both flags.
